While purchasing a pre-configured computer system is common, building one’s own customized computer is becoming increasingly popular. In order to build a computer, a person will need some computer knowledge, patience, and various computer parts (hardware). By building your own computer as opposed to buying a pre-configured one, you will be able to create a custom machine that matches your specific wants and needs, you will enable yourself to easily upgrade your computer in the future because you will understand your system in and out, you may be able to save some money, you will learn all about computers and familiarize yourself with computer components, and more. If you are thinking about building your own computer, here is a brief computer building checklist for your reference.

• Step One: The first step in building a computer is deciding what type of computer you want to build. There are many possibilities and you should make your choice keeping several things in mind. For example:
  • Who will be using the computer (you, your spouse, business partners, employees, kids, etc.)
  • What will users be using the computer for (research, writing, project creation, etc.)
  • Where will the computer be used (business, home office, bedroom, living room, etc.)

  : The next step, and really the basis for your customized computer, is choosing the Motherboard. There are hundreds of motherboards to choose from and each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so you will want to research motherboards in depth. Once you have chosen your motherboard, you are ready to choose all the other computer parts, and then start putting all everything together.

• Step Three: The third step may be considered the most fun step. This is when you get to choose all the computer hardware that you’ll need as well as all the extra fun parts you want (such as webcams, scanners, etc). Below is a non-exhaustive list of computer parts you may need to build your custom computer:
  • CPU (Central Processing Unit) – this must be of the right brand and right pin configuration to fit with your motherboard. You can also purchase as Motherboard/CPU package. The CPU is more or less the brain of your computer. You must get a motherboard that matches the CPU you want.
  • RAM (Random Access Memory) – this also must be of the correct pin configuration to be compatible with your motherboard. The amount of RAM you get is important for running your operating system (discussed below) and other programs. Many operating systems require at least 32MB (Megabytes) of RAM, but you should invest in much more to ensure your system runs smoothly.
  • Optical Drive

    – basically this refers to CD-ROM drives, which allow you to listen to CDs and watch DVDs. However, you can also purchase drives capable of burning DVDs and CDs.

  • Hard Disk Drive (Hard Drive) – this holds all your data and it must be compatible with the specific motherboard you choose. You will want to ensure you choose one with enough GB (gigabytes) to store all the information you want. A good rule of thumb is to never get less than a 20GB drive.
  • Operating System – the most common operating system is Windows. Linux is another popular option.
  • Keyboard – an important piece to your computer puzzle. There are several keyboards to choose from. Be sure to get one that is compatible with the rest of your computer. And, choose a keyboard that is comfortable for you. Nowadays, there are ergonomic computer keyboards that are comfortable and help prevent injuries related to computing (such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome).
  • Mouse – you can get really detailed with your mouse, or just go with a standard, inexpensive mouse. Yu can get a mouse with no buttons, a one-click mouse, a two-button mouse, a mouse with a ball, an optical mouse, and more. It just depends on what you like and how much money you would like to spend.
  • Monitor – this also really depends on what you like and how much money you are willing to spend. You can invest in a nice, expensive, big, flat screen monitor, or you can get an inexpensive traditional monitor. And, there are several monitors in between the two ends of the spectrum. Note that the larger the screen, the easier on your eyes your monitor will be and this should be taken into account, particularly if you plan to be on your computer for several hours a day.
  • Miscellaneous – speakers, printer, scanner, sound card, floppy drive, zip drive, modem, and webcam.
• Step Four : This is the step that may take a lot of patience, but it can also be very fun and you will learn a lot about computers. This is the step where you get to put all the parts you bought together and build your ideal computer.
