How to Clean and Organize your Computer for Faster Speeds
If your slow webpage loading speeds have become unbearable, it’s time to do some computer clean up. Freeing your machine of clutter is actually very simple. You don’t need to pay a computer repair store to improve the performance of your PC. Simply follow this easy-to-use guide and you’ll soon be the owner of a faster, uncluttered computer.
- Internet Options
The first thing to do is to clean up your Internet files. First off, close all programs and start with a normal desktop. Open your Internet Explorer browser. On the top menu bar, click on the Tools tab and select from this tab the Internet Options link. The Internet Options menu allows you to change your Internet security settings and delete Internet files that may be cluttering up your machine. Once you have the Internet Options window open, you should see a button labeled “Delete History”. Click on this option and a new window will appear, asking you to select what you want to delete. You can chose to get rid of temporary Internet files, browser history, cookies, saved passwords, etc. Choose “delete all” if you wish to clear up everything. Make a selection and another window will appear showing the deletion process. Once it’s is done, close all windows and return to your normal desktop.
- Disk Cleanup
You can access the disk cleanup option via the Start menu. Go to the Start menu, then Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools and finally Disk Cleanup. You can also create a desktop icon for Disk Cleanup by simply dragging and dropping the option from the start menu to the desired place on your desktop. Once you’ve done this, start the disk cleanup and wait. This program will calculate how much space you can free up on your C: drive and then ask you what you would like to delete. You’ll be asked to delete Temporary Internet Files, recycle bin files and temporary files, or to compress old files. After you’ve selected the files, click the OK button. A message will then ask you if you are sure. Click yes, and let the cleanup program run on its own. It will close automatically when finished.
- Spyware
Getting rid of adware, malware, Trojans, spyware and other harmful viruses that might be present in your computer will do wonders for increasing the speed and performance of your PC. Cleaning up harmful bugs sometimes requires more than Norton or Macafee. Spybot S&D and Superantispyware are two great, free online malware removal programs you can use. Download one of these and run an update and full system scan on your computer. This will take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how many files your computer has. Once it’s done, however, you will be rid of harmful bugs and viruses and your computer will run much better.
- Disk Defrag
Lastly, run your Disk defragmenter. You can access this option via the Windows Start menu. To get there go from the Start menu to Programs, then to Accessories, then to System Tools, and finally o Disk Defragmenter. You can create a desktop icon for this application the same way you did for the Disk Cleanup option. Simply drag and drop. Once you open the Disk Defragmenter you’ll have the options of analyzing or defraging your C: drive. Chose the analyze option first. Your computer will then tell you whether you need to defrag your computer or not. If you do need to defrag your computer, go ahead and do so. The process can take a few hours, but you can leave the program running as you work on other things. It will close automatically upon completing its task.
